How To Install An Oven Pigtail

When you buy an oven normally the pigtail, or the electrical cord, is not installed on the oven. Here is how you wire up the pigtail to the oven.

On the back of the oven you will find an access plate that you can remove to gain access to the electrical terminal board. There will be a hole close to the access panel that will need a connector installed for the pigtail to go through. This connector will have screws that will tighten and clamp the cord.

Depending on which type of pigtail that you have, either a three prong or a four prong, there will be either three wires or four wires on the cord. There will most likely be four connection points in the oven if it is a newer oven.

The three prong pigtails with three wires will have the two outside wires as the two hot lugs and the middle wire will be the neutral/ground wire. The terminal block in the oven should be marked for the connections. If there is a green lug that will be where your middle or ground wire will hook. The other two wires will go to the other two lugs on the terminal block.

If you have a four prong pigtail the two hot wires will be marked as such, the neutral will be separate from the equipment ground. Replace the access cover plate and plug the oven in to the receptacle.

How To Install A Clothes Dryer Pigtail

Installing a pigtail, or an electrical cord, on your clothes dryer is basically the same as installing one on your oven. The actual cord cap looks different than the one for the oven but they wire up the same way. Here is how to do this.

There is an access plate on the back of the dryer that you must remove to get to the electrical connections.  There is a small hole close to the access for your pigtail wires to go through. You will need to put a connector in this hole. There are normally three lugs that your pigtail wires will hook to. The two outside wires will be the two hot wires and the middle one will be the ground/neutral.

If you have a four prong pigtail there will be four pigtail wires and four lugs on the dryer terminal block. Green is always ground and white is always neutral. Sometimes on the house wiring a white will be serving as a hot on 240 volt circuits.

Tighten the lugs on the terminal block and replace the access cover.
